In June 2026, Protopasta switched to plastic spool sides. These durable plastic spools can be returned for reuse or disassembled to recycle locally when empty. Filament produced prior to June will still have cardboard sides, but those work great too! We use cardboard spools without mods, but you can add printed plastic edge guards (download here) if desired.
We're a little sad to see cardboard sides go, and even though they work, consumer expectations have shifted. Acknowledging this shift, we've moved to plastic sides. If you've always admired our filament look and performance, but weren't sure about cardboard, we hear you. Or maybe you wanted a premium spool to compliment the premium filament? In any case, enjoy our exceptional filaments on fancy, durable, recyclable #5 plastic spool sides with a cardboard core.
It's sometimes challenging to be a 3rd party filament. Not being integrated into OEM ecosystems, you might not hear about us or find our filament as obvious to use.
