This month we explored Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3). CaCO3 is interesting as both an aesthetic and functional additive. We've used it to make cMatte matte PLA as well as custom, special ordered filament to simulate bone. Also known as limestone, we drew inspiration from CaCO3's stone-like qualities. As an added bonus, we're able to source CaCO3 locally.
We included 4 filaments in this month's Endless Exploration shipment. We created 3 new cMatte colors with a stone look for red brick, terracotta, and granite filaments (below).
The 4th filament has no pigment, but has a high loading of CaCO3 and is thus white (above). The higher loading is more dense for a more weighted feel as well as more bone-like density for medical imaging like with X-ray. Below are sample CT images from Blake Cochran, PhD (UNSW Sydney). If you have further interest in the topic, consider his 2018 publication: Development of 3D printing filaments for bespoke X-Ray phantoms.
We didn't want to weigh you down (pun intended) with too much high density CaCO3 filament. Still, we did want to expose you to this unique filament to see what you think and how you'll use it.
For 60% CaCO3, handle with care. We were able to reduce brittleness so it bends before snapping, but it's still not a strong filament with so much CaCO3 inside. It also sticks really well to print surfaces so consider Magigoo for stick and release. You can print with a generic PLA settings, but reduce temperature to reduce stringing.
Regarding the new cMatte colors, we're delighted by the aesthetic and hope you are too. They are easy-to-print and low gloss like our other cMatte colors, but have additional texture and unique colors for a natural, stone-like appearance.
We hope you enjoy the mix of a technical filament that pushes the limits of what's possible along with some complimentary aesthetically pleasing filaments. Feel free to enjoy our other cMatte filaments or contact us if you require custom CaCO3 filament.
