Endless PLA #32 (August 2024) - Change is Coming!

It's not every month we get a new ingredient! We've created Protopasta's first Thermochromic filaments just for June + July subscribers to August's Endless PLA delivery!!!

What is Thermochromic? It's color changing with temperature. At about room temperature and colder, these filaments are one color, but when touched with a warm hand, heated by warm water, or melted by your 3D printer, they become a different color!

Now, this change is reversable. The "cold" color resets when the temperature gets low enough. You can put your filament (or 3D prints) in the freezer if you want to make sure they are the cold color (like below).

Below is a look at the "cold" colors on the top and the "warm" colors on the bottom. Same colors, just taken from the freezer, then submerged in warm water.

Now remember, this is PLA, not TPU and TPU like in our last Endless Exploration. Submerge in boiling water not only risks burning yourself, but also deforming your 3D prints. The color change should happen at approximately 88 deg F (31 deg C). Even though the raw pigments are rated to change at 31 deg C, each color behaves a bit differently. The temperature and rate at which they change varies somewhat.

These Endless PLA Contemporary colors all have a touch of pearl mica for some extra texture and class. The pearl makes them feel even more special and fancy! Complimentary colors were chosen for/from our Classics, Electric Lemonade (ELY), Summertime Green (SUM), and Winter Blue (WTB). Winter Blue doesn't exactly fit the summer theme, but looks perfect and gave me a good laugh when selecting.

There is something about summer and fruit (tropical smoothies anyone?) so I ended up giving these color change filaments fruit-inspired names: Just Peachy (JPT), The Vine Fruit (DFT), and Sour Apple (SAT). JST and SAT need no explaining, but DFT looks like grapes and blueberries, The Vine Fruit. Get it?

I have to tell on myself because DFT started as De Vine Fruit. "De" meaning "the" and "De Vine" meaning "divine", but I think this is a case where I made things too complicated and cryptic. Maybe you can relate? It happens...
